INTENT
At Benwick Primary School, we recognise the importance of physical education (PE) to promote a positive attitude towards an active and healthy lifestyle. We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, giving all children the opportunity to develop their physical competence and confidence. The intent of our PE curriculum is to provide every pupil with high quality PE and sport provision. It is our vision that all children succeed and achieve their full potential. We aim to ensure all of our children leave primary school with the passion, knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for lifelong participation in physical activity and competitive sport
We aspire to embed life-long values through the teaching of PE. We aim to develop children’s sense of commitment, endeavour, fair play and tolerance, whilst enabling them to cooperate and collaborate with others during group situations. We wish to develop children’s confidence and self-esteem, whilst encouraging a positive self-image. We want to teach children the skills necessary to keep them safe, such as being able to swim, through fostering an appreciation of safe practice.
IMPLEMENTATION
PE at Benwick Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including: invasion games, net and wall games, strike and field games, dance, gymnastics, swimming and outdoor adventure.
Our long-term plans set out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year, ensuring the skills and requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Pupils participate in two high-quality PE lessons each work, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. Children in Year 5 & 6 also access swimming lessons to ensure they meet the minimum requirement at the end of KS2.
The scheme of work we follow is GetSet4PE.
We use a range of assessment tools and strategies within our PE curriculum. Alongside formal assessment, we encourage our children to speak out using our pupil voice strategy. This ensures that we are providing the best opportunities for all pupils by listening to how they feel the PE curriculum is being delivered as well as suggestions they might have going forward to guarantee the utmost engagement from all of our pupils.
Children are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular sporting activities. Lunchtime and after-school sports clubs are delivered by a specialist coach (Premier Sports) and are available on Thursdays and Fridays.
IMPACT
The impact of our Physical Education curriculum and lessons is that children strive to be the best that they can be, develop endurance and resilience and, as a result, enjoy the success of competitive sports.
Through our carefully planned and sequenced Physical Education curriculum, children are encouraged and supported to become physically confident which, in turn, develops both their physical and mental health and well-being. Our high quality Physical Education lessons, not only improve the health and mental well-being of our pupils, but also reduces stress, improves concentration and promotes correct physical growth and development.
The impact of the Physical Education curriculum is evidenced in a range of ways, including: pupil voice, lesson visits, engagement in lunchtime and after school sports clubs.
