PSHCE
Intent
The intent of our PSHCE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more about how to play a positive and successful role within our society, both as a child and as an adult within the future.
Our aim is to provide pupils with a knowledge of their world, locally, nationally and globally and give children the confidence and skills to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues which are part of growing up. It is our intention to provide the children with opportunities for them to learn about respect, rights and responsibilities, learn to appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society and celebrate differences. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We promote pupils’ self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and help them to form and maintain worthwhile and satisfying relationships, based on respect for themselves and for others at home, school, work and in the community. We work in partnership with parents and carers, and with the wider community, to support children in all aspects of their wellbeing.
Implementation
Our curriculum is designed to directly support the pastoral education as well as academic outcomes. The school primarily uses resources taken from the Cambridgeshire Primary Personal Development Programme. Our PSHE and Citizenship programme includes teaching and learning within the following strands and themes:
Myself and My Relationships: including My Emotions, Beginning and Belonging, Anti-bullying, Family and Friends and Managing Change.
Healthy and Safer Lifestyles: including Personal Safety, Digital Lifestyles, Drug Education, Relationships and Sex Education, Healthy Lifestyles and Managing Safety and Risk (including Road Safety).
Citizenship: including Diversity and Communities, Rights, Rules and Responsibilities and Working Together.
Economic Wellbeing: including Financial Capability.
One timetabled PSHE lesson is taught throughout the school. In Reception it is an integral part of topic work covered during the year. There are many opportunities where children are involved in PSHCE outside of the discreet
lesson including cross curricular teaching in science, RE, Geography, History and weekly assemblies.
Impact
· Children will become healthy, tolerant and responsible members of society
· Children will have skills that prepare them for life and work in modern Britain
· Children will have the skills to make safe and informed choices
· Children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school
· Attendance and behaviour will be good
· Children will demonstrate our school values of respect, responsibility, honesty, resilience and community
We assess children’s learning in PSHCE in line with approaches used in the rest of the curriculum. Children’s learning is planned using learning objectives which are explained to the children. Teachers draw on their observation of children’s learning and children’s self-assessment to arrive at their overall assessments. Teacher assessment is used to provide an overview of the child’s learning within a unit of work and to inform planning for future lessons.
